Hiking the Horizontal
Trans-disciplinary Practices for Tackling Questions Big and Small
Presented by the Department of Dance, Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, Office of Outreach & Engagement
Dancers in Company 2018 Symposium
Keynote address by Liz Lerman
What roles can art have in fields as diverse as faith, aging, particle physics, war-time medicine, and human rights law? What happens to our various fields of study and action when we collaborate across disciplines and domains? How does sharing these ideas sustain inquiry, innovation, and the emergence of new knowledge? How do artistic practices develop through choreography, concert, and community contribute to the way that artists can live in the world? In this talk, MacArthur Fellow, choreographer, writer, and educator Liz Lerman will tackle these questions, as she has over decades of dance-making about urgent real-life issues.
The keynote address is free and open to the public.
About Dancers in Company 2018
Dancers in Company 2018 will explore the theme of collective action and its relationship to sustainability. Collaborating with community and campus partners to better understand how a group of people share an intention, their performance will question, challenge, and inspire ideas about how we make things happen together, at times inviting collective participation in the performance (no dancing required!).
Dancers in Company 2018: CollectivEnergies performances will take place February 21-24 at 8:00 p.m. in the Space Place Theater. Tickets for the concerts are available through the Hancher Box Office at 319.335.1160 or 1.800.HANCHER or online at hancher.uiowa.edu/tickets.
Support for this event is provided in part by the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies and the Office of Outreach & Engagement, Climate for Change Theme Semester.
