No Depression, the journal of roots music, doesn’t pull any punches: “You want some authenticity in your folk music or bluegrass—I give you Kaia Kater.” Of African-Caribbean descent and born in Québec, Kater has immersed herself in Canadian folk music as well as the music of Appalachia. With superb banjo skills, a jazz inflected voice, and a gift for song craft, she respects tradition while pushing her music forward.

New this season! Our partners at University Catering will offer a variety of wonderful food to enjoy during Club Hancher concerts.

Food must be ordered online and in advance at this website. Orders must be completed by noon the day prior to the event. Patrons who have ordered food are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes prior to Club Hancher concerts to pick up their food.

Kaia Kater brings passion, personal stories to Hancher
The Daily Iowan - Sunday, March 31, 2019
One bass, one guitar, three lovely voices, and a banjo: This is how to put on a lovely, intimate, Saturday night show. Only Canadian banjo player Kaia Kater could pull this off with such grace. Performing with bass player Andrew Ryan and guitarist Daniel Rougeau, Kater lit up Hancher’s Strauss Hall on March 30. She put on two performances, at 6:30 and 9 p.m., and though they were fairly short at a little over an hour each, each was memorable.
