Elias String Quartet
Presented in collaboration with the University of Iowa String Quartet Residency Program
When it comes to the Elias String Quartet, we agree with BBC Music Magazine: The musicians are "simply astounding, in the freshness, intensity, assurance, and seeming spontaneity of their playing." Hancher will welcome back one of our favorite ensembles to introduce a new chamber music experience at Hancher.
Join us in Strauss Hall for an intimate setup—the audience will surround the musicians who will be facing one another on a raised stage—as the quartet performs music by Stravinsky and Mendelssohn as well as Schubert's Death and the Maiden, a gorgeous masterwork written on the themes of anguish and yearning that has been called "one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire" (Los Angeles Philharmonic Association).
PROGRAM
Igor STRAVINSKY: Three Pieces for string quartet
Felix MENDELSSOHN: String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor, op. 80
Franz SCHUBERT: String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor, D 810 ("Death and the Maiden")
There will be one intermission.
