Presented in collaboration with University of Iowa Department of Dance and the UI Dance Company

Part of Hancher's 51st season

An indispensable dance company celebrates 100 years, bringing its founder's classic works to the stage alongside new work by contemporary choreographers. Martha Graham—an icon among 20th century artistic icons—radically expanded the dance vocabulary, and her work has captivated audiences worldwide while influencing generations of artists.

In its centennial season, the Martha Graham Dance Company comes to Hancher to perform Graham's 1947 duet Errand into the Maze based on the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, Agnes de Mille's classic Rodeo with Aaron Copland's beloved score reorchestrated in a bluegrass style by Punch Brothers violinist Gabe Witcher, and Hofesh Shechter's CAVE inspired by the rave scene.

The program will include Graham's Panorama, which was choreographed in 1935 and is an electric example of the modernism of its time. The work will be performed by 38 student dancers from the University of Iowa Department of Dance. Learn more about the collaboration.

PROGRAM
Martha GRAHAM: Errand into the Maze
Martha GRAHAM: Panorama, set on the University of Iowa Dance Company and additional UI dance students
Agnes DE MILLE: Rodeo or The Courting of Burnt Ranch
Hofesh SHECHTER: CAVE

There will be a post-show reception in the Stanley Café following the performance.

In Spring 2023, rumors began bubbling up in the Department of Dance. It was exciting news just to hear that the Martha Graham Dance Company was coming to Hancher Auditorium—but even more thrilling was the news that some selected students would have the opportunity to perform Panorama, a large ensemble dance originally choreographed by Martha Graham in 1935. “I was already interested in working with undergraduates on a project,” explains Katelyn Perez, a talented graduate student who stepped into the role of rehearsal director for Panorama. “When our department chair, Rebekah Kowal, reached out to me about the collaboration with the Martha Graham Dance Company, it just seemed like the perfect fit.”

The Gazette - Thursday, March 21, 2024
A century of Martha Graham Dance Company’s artistry is coming to the Hancher stage March 29 in “GRAHAM100,” with University of Iowa dance students in the opening spotlight. As the legendary late Martha Graham intended. “Having the students on the program and (doing) some residency activities, it just makes a world of difference,” Janet Eilber, the company’s artistic director since 2005, said by phone from her office in Manhattan’s West Village.
UI Dancers
University of Iowa Dance - Tuesday, March 19, 2024
Before the semester began, during a week of snowstorms and below-zero temperatures, UI student dancers collected in Halsey Hall for a week-long intensive to learn Martha Graham’s Panorama, led by Virginie Mécène, the current director of Graham 2 (the dance company comprising the most advanced students of the Martha Graham School) and program director at the Martha Graham Center for Contemporary Dance.
