Part of Hancher's 51st season

This is a double bill of vocal powerhouses whose roots run deep.

Mavis Staples is an R&B singer, a soul singer, a gospel singer, and the very definition of a legend. Her records, both with the Staple Singers and as a solo artist, have provided a soulful soundtrack to decades of American life. In the last decade, she has enjoyed a resurgence with a string of albums produced by Jeff Tweedy, M. Ward, and Ben Harper.

Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter—the husband-and-wife duo known as The War And Treaty—were named the 2022 Duo/Group of the Year by the Americana Music Association—a tribute to their stellar songwriting and captivating stage presence. The War And Treaty was a featured guest at Staples's 80th birthday celebration and is, like many artists, an inheritor of her profound legacy.

The War and Treaty
The Gazette - Thursday, November 30, 2023
The War and Treaty, the husband and wife duo of Michael and Tanya Trotter, returns with “Lover’s Game,” an all-in spectacle of soul, rock ’n’ roll, and country rhythm & blues that shakes and simmers in just the right spots. For those who have followed the Trotters’ emotional story since 2018’s “Healing Tide” and its follow-up, 2020’s “Hearts Town,” the new record’s gumbo of influences should come as no great shock, but there’s plenty to relish for new and seasoned admirers alike.

Mavis Staples doesn’t receive the credit the R&B/soul singer/civil activist deserves. But there’s a reason icons such as Aretha Franklin, Prince and David Byrne have collaborated with the three-time Grammy Award winner.
