Iowa City's Mic Check Poetry Fest is a much-loved two-day celebration of spoken word poetry and its power to bear witness, create community, and inspire change. Hancher is proud to host the opening showcase featuring teen poets from IC Speaks and headliners Danez Smith and Denice Frohman.
Smith is a Black, Queer, Poz writer and performer from St. Paul, Minnesota, and the author of Homie, (Greywolf Press, 2020), winner of the Minnesota Book Award, and the Heartland Bookseller Award, and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Denice Frohman is a poet and performer from New York City now residing in Philadelphia. A former Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion, she's featured on hundreds of national and international stages from The Apollo to the White House.
