Sun Ra Arkestra and Theon Cross
Part of FEaST Festival
Presented in collaboration with FEaST Festival and Feed Me Weird Things
Iowa's premier avant-garde presenting series Feed Me Weird Things returns with its adventurous, multimodal FEaST festival. Hancher joins the celebration as a programmatic partner during the festival's closing event featuring Sun Ra Arkestra and Theon Cross.
Originally founded in the mid-20th century by jazz composer Sun Ra—and now led by saxophonist Marshall Allen—the Arkestra has been at the forefront of exploring new horizons in creative music and inspiring the ever-evolving tenets of Afrofuturism.
Opening act Theon Cross has reinvented the tuba as the low-voiced leader of innovative and explosive—and hard to define—ensembles. A core member of Shabaka Hutching's Sons of Kemet ensemble, Cross's music often remixes jazz, dub, hip-hop, soca, grime, and other sounds from the Afro-Caribbean diaspora.
