Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah
Part of Club Hancher
When it comes to passionate innovators pushing music in new directions, this artist is chief among them.
Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah contains multitudes. “[J]ust because it can be said that my work is inherently jazz does not mean that it is exclusively jazz,” the musician has posited. Perhaps best known as a trumpeter, he is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer who has not only rethought the foundations of music, but also the techniques for making that music. Whether employing a new harmonic convention or an unvoiced tone emphasizing breath over vibration, Adjuah is stretching our understanding of what’s possible on the bandstand. That’s why he calls his creative output “Stretch Music.”
“New Orleans musician [Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah] craves a more absorbent and sensitive kind of jazz. [The album] Stretch Music finds him experimenting with moods and electronic textures, bumping against the genre's conventions even as he remains rooted in tradition.” — Pitchfork
Formerly known as Christian Scott.
