This is the Army: Mobilizing Dancers for War
Featuring Rebekah Kowal
Part of Hancher's Infinite Dream festival
From an American standpoint, U.S. involvement in World War II was a national security imperative. In what ways did the war simultaneously advance American cultural interests? UI faculty and Department of Dance chair Rebekah Kowal is currently writing a book about the role of dance in 20th century U.S. war politics. In that project–and this presentation–Kowal tells a surprising yet untold story about how the war spread American dance practices and notions about dancing bodies across the globe at a pivotal moment for the nation's rising geopolitical power and cultural influence.
