Performing arts center delays season announcement, announces family-friendly online content
University of Iowa’s Hancher Auditorium will reschedule The Big Splash! for September 2022 and make it a centerpiece of its 50th season.
The free, three-day outdoor festival originally was scheduled for Aug. 14-16 and presented in collaboration with the City of Iowa City, the UI’s IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering, and many additional community partners. The decision was made with collaborators and supporters with the health and safety of the community as the top priority.
Hancher also will delay the announcement of its 2020-2021 season, giving the performing arts center flexibility as the current public health crisis continues to unfold. A specific date for the announcement has not been set.
Hancher and the Hancher Guild have canceled the annual Hancher Family Fun Nights in June, but the organization remains committed to connecting with families. In collaboration with the quartet Third Coast Percussion, Hancher in the coming weeks will present a series of family-friendly videos that encourage young people to create their own performances. Families will be invited to upload short videos of those performances to share with Hancher’s Facebook audiences. A potential future live event on the Hancher stage may feature some of the children and families who submit videos.
Subscribers to Hancher’s e-newsletter continue to receive updates as well as a series of new videos titled “Hancher Community Connections.” These videos, released every other Thursday, feature some of Hancher’s loyal friends talking about the arts, Hancher, and the importance of both in their lives. More details about upcoming performances and projects will be released as they become available.
