The groundbreaking Kronos Quartet returns to Iowa City to perform a new multimedia work—composed by Aleksandra Vrebalov with a film by Bill Morrison—commemorating the centennial of the outbreak of World War One. The program will also include a new work by Mary Kouyoumdjian, co-commissioned by Hancher as part of the quartet’s Under 30 Project.

Musicians:
David Harrington, violin
John Sherba, violin
Hank Dutt, viola
Sunny Yang, cello

Program:

Good Medicine from Salome Dances for Peace by Terry Riley

Flow by Laurie Anderson; arr. Jacob Garchik

Groung by Komitas; arr. Mary Kouyoumdjian

The Beatitudes by Vladimir Martynov

Bombs of Beirut by Mary Kouyoumdjian

Please Note: The performance of Bombs of Beirut includes actual recordings of the sounds of warfare, including incoming missiles and the detonation of bombs, all at high decibel levels. These are loud sounds that continue for approximately four minutes. Audience members may wish to avoid this piece if there is any history of PTSD, anxiety disorders, or other psychological or medical conditions that would likely be exacerbated by exposure to such sounds.
