Powerhouse clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh strives to reach a balance between classical music, jazz, and the music of his homeland, Syria. Azmeh, who is also a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, with whom he won a Grammy in 2017, will be joined by his CityBand ensemble for this seminar that is ideal for students studying chamber music, jazz, or composition. This engagement will be presented as part of Hancher’s Embracing Complexity project, which takes a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to building understanding of contemporary Islamic cultures and Muslim identity.
